Welcome to Year 4! It is an extremely exciting year group at our school. Alongside all the exciting learning, we have our first residential trip staying away for two nights and experiencing activities such as rock climbing and raft building.
We use Maths No Problem and Talk For Writing and they really help us with all our learning in all the other subjects too. To start the year our focus is the Romans. Tasks include workshops, making a shield, designing a mosaic and cooking Roman food. Learning through experiences makes the learning truly memorable.
We go swimming in the Spring term. In History we travel back to the Second World War, where we learn about the war, both on the home front and abroad. For our enrichment day we visit the Imperial War Museum, seeing original artefacts that were used all those years ago.
During the summer term we learn about London, while in Science we investigate ‘Living Things and their habitats’. We always try to make great use of our brilliant outdoor facilities in PE and hopefully nurture some future Olympians in Athletics.
To see what the children have understood in their work, we try where possible, to mark the children’s work with them to allow us to go over any misunderstandings with them.
Reading is also a regular part of our week, both individually and in groups. The aim is that every teacher should know where the children are in their learning, and be able to challenge them with questions and new challenges, while also supporting them where needed.
Our homework grid allows the children to be creative at home. Each half term the children will get a selection of tasks to do, which can be done in any order and in multiple ways. This year the children have made videos, cooked food, and created presentations on a range of exciting topics. We also continue to use Mathletics, which is a great way for the children to develop their maths understanding, and have fun doing it.
